Hello. My name is Dan Klumper.
I was born and raised on a farm outside of Worthington, MN. During my time at Worthington High School, I played football, basketball, and baseball. I was named male athlete of the year and graduated with Honors in 2001. After high school, I went on to Augustana College in Sioux Falls, SD where I majored in History and Secondary Education. I was a four year starter at wide receiver for the football team and team captain my senior year. My wife Abby and I have three beautiful daughters, Olivia, 12, Isabel, 9, and Hazel, 1. I have taught 6th grade social studies at Brandon Valley Middle School for the entirety of my nine year teaching career. I have also spent time coaching middle school football and basketball. During the summer, I work for Sandia Roofing in Sioux Falls, SD. We shingle between 100 and 120 houses during the summer.
I have written three books: "Johnny Rawten" which is about a time-traveling 6th grader who goes back to the ancient worlds I teach about and tries to figure out where he is at. "Ancient Quest" is the sequel and it is about Johnny going back to the ancient worlds, but this time, has to complete a specific task in each world. My third book, "HEals: The story of Tragedy, Miracles, and Love" is a book I wrote about my dad's motorcycle accident and his battle to stay alive and overcome a traumatic brain injury.
I started a "Wax Museum" at BVMS, which gives students an awesome opportunity to work for something other than a grade. It is an experience they will always remember and a chance to make a difference. The money raised at the Wax Museum goes to a student selected charity. So far, through the Wax Museum, we have donated over $20,000 to the Make-A-Wish foundation of Sioux Falls.
My life experiences have taught me a lot and given me a unique perspective on life. I have always had a high interest in computers/technology and helping kids. These two passions have come together to mold my teaching career. My athletic background has shown my the value and importance of practicing and preparing. My shingling background has given me a fearlessness and a "don't quit" attitude no matter how hard the situation may be. My wife and I had Olivia during our second year of college so raising a baby, while completing course work and playing football has given me a unique outlook on life-one of compassion and understanding, of overcoming adversity and reaching goals no matter what. I have had my back against the wall. I know what it feels like. I also know that I can do it.
